Rating: 8,0/10 (1244 votes)  The Temple of Venus and Roma was the largest religious building in ancient Rome. The building occupied the entire territory from the valley of the Colosseum to the Basilica of Maxentius. The temple was erected on a pedestal in length reaching 145 meters, and in width – 100 meters. The temple was built in 135 AD. under the Emperor Hadrian on the site where the portico of the Golden House of Nero was located. The temple was built from two cellas, which were located one opposite the other, and had one common wall. One of them was dedicated to the goddess of Rome – Rome, another – to the goddess Venus. In 307, a number of restoration works were carried out inside the temple, during which two apses were carved in the back part intact, in which the statues of the goddesses were placed. Niches for statues were framed by porphyry columns. The floor of the temple was decorated with a geometric mosaic made of colored marble. The eastern cella has been best preserved to this day, as it has long been part of the church of Santa Francesca Romana .
