The building has a rather rich history. In the 15th century, on the site of the chapel, there was a prison in which the Catholic priest Jan Sarkander was imprisoned. The priest was accused of collaborating with the enemy before the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War. In March 1620, from numerous wounds received during torture, Sarkander died. Five centuries later, after a visit to Olomouc by Pope John Paul II, Sarkander was canonized. In the 1820s, a Baroque chapel was erected on the site of the prison. Throughout its existence, the chapel was rebuilt several times, acquiring its present appearance only at the beginning of the 20th century. The last reconstruction of the building was carried out according to the project of Eduard Socor. The chapel is decorated with sculptures of saints and stucco moldings by Josef Hladikom. The building has an interesting exposition of medieval instruments of torture. Also worth a visit is the basement of the chapel, which houses the tombstone of St. John Sarkander.
