During the reign of Alexander The second was given permission by the city authorities to organize a Roman Catholic cemetery. Soon it was decided to build a chapel in the cemetery. The design of the chapel was entrusted to N.L. Benoit. The building was laid in July 1856. In 1859, the consecration of the chapel by Metropolitan Vaclav Zhilinsky in the name of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary took place. At the end of the construction, the structure was a basilical building in the form of a Latin equilateral cross. The chapel was decorated with a shallow perspective portal of the western entrance, above which was a stained glass rose. The building existed in this form for 20 years. In 1877 it was decided to turn the chapel into a church. The project was also entrusted to Benoit. In the course of work on the western vestibule, a tower superstructure was built in the form of an octagonal bell tower with a high tent and a ringing tier. The superstructure is crowned with a Catholic cross. The paintings inside the building were made by the artist A.I. Charlemagne. Six altars were built in the church. In 1879, the church was solemnly illuminated in the name of the Visit of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1902, the church received the status of a parish church. The temple houses the tombs of the Counts Pototskikh and the Benois family. In December 1898, the architect himself was buried in the church.
