The people of Shanghai believed that after his death, he would keep the calm and peace of their city. However, the history of this temple is far from peaceful. It was bombed from the sea in 1842 along with the Yuyuan Garden. And in the 19th century, the garden, along with the temple, was a rebel base and therefore suffered from the operations of the Chinese government. In 1922, the temple was rebuilt, as after the last fire almost nothing remained of it. This temple is an interesting example of traditional Shanghai architecture. Today it houses a tea house and is part of the Yuyuan Garden.
