The project of this church was designed by the architect William Doyle. The cathedral was built by the French Jesuits in the neo-Gothic style in five years – 1905 to 1910. After the diocese of Shanghai was established in 1950, the cathedral immediately became the cathedral of the diocese. During the 1966 Cultural Revolution, the temple was badly damaged. The stained glass windows were shattered, the ceiling stripped down and the spiers ripped off. For the next ten years the cathedral was used as a storage for grain. The church was reopened only in 1978. The spiers were restored by 1980, and in 1989 the church celebrated the first ever Mass in Chinese. In 2002, the restoration of stained-glass windows gradually began.
