Rating: 8,1/10 (300 votes) This is the only temple complex in all of Shanghai dedicated to Confucius. It was built during the Yuan Dynasty in 1294. In 1856, the temple was destroyed by the imperial army. It was restored only in 1983. Shanghai-Wenmyao traditionally was not only a temple, but also an educational institution. Today it is known for hosting one of the largest book markets in all of Shanghai. This temple copies the temples of Confucius in Beijing and Qufu – in the homeland of the philosopher. However, it is much smaller than them. The temple is located in the Huangpu area, next to the Sunday market Wenmyao.
