Lake Toba is located in the middle of the northern part of Sumatra and is located in the volcanic caldera, which is formed by the volcano of the same name. The lake reaches 100 km in length, 30 km in width, and the depth of the lake ranges up to 505 meters. This lake is considered the largest lake in Indonesia and the largest volcanic lake in the world.

Lake Toba is believed to have formed approximately 69,000-77,000 years ago as a result of the massive eruption of the Toba supervolcano, which caused climate change. It is proved that the eruption of the Toba volcano led to a volcanic winter - pollution of the earth's atmosphere with ash and a cold snap by 3-5 degrees in this place, which led to the death of vegetation and some species of animals.

The lake has very clear and clean water, which is home to a large number of fish and plankton. The lake is a favorable habitat for fish such as Mozambican tilapia, guppies, rasbor, carp, spotted gourami and others. Not so long ago, fish farms were established on a part of the lake, and this led to a change in the flora and fauna of the lake, as well as to cloudiness of the water.

In the middle of the lake there is the Samosir island, which was formed as a result of the uplifting of rocks. The local population lives on the island's territory - Bataks, who are mainly engaged in agriculture and fishing.
