The Rotunda of St. George is the oldest church in the city. The church was erected in the central part of the 'Konstantinov quarter' on the territory of ancient Serdica in the IV century.

Initially, the building was used as a baptistery. The church has the shape of a rotunda, six semicircular annexes and tall narrow windows. The height of the dome is 13.7 meters.

In the X-XII centuries, the church kept the relics of John of Rylsky. After Bulgaria was conquered by the Turks, the church was turned into a mosque, which it remained until 1878. During the restoration work carried out in the 20th century, three layers of frescoes were discovered here, which were painted over during the period of Turkish rule. The earliest frescoes date from the 10th century.
