The Giant Mountains are the tallest mountains in Bohemia, formerly forming part of the historic borders in the northeastern part of the old kingdom. Until the 16th century, the mountains remained completely uninhabited, but due to mining and glass production, the first settlements began to appear here.

Soon, the beauty of the Ispaline Mountains attracted the first tourists here. And today this natural landmark is one of the most popular in the country, and for the resorts of Retz pod Snezhkou and Spindleruv Mlyn, the tourism business is the main industry.

Even though that the Krkonose was one of the few protected nature reserves in the Czech Republic, until the 90s of the XX century, it often suffered from acid rain caused by the heavy industry of the nearest neighboring countries - Poland and East Germany. Some of the trees in the park were hit by acid rains, another part was damaged by insects, leaving only gnawed gray skeletons devoid of foliage. In this regard, a massive deforestation was carried out here, organized in order to stop the spread of pests.

The majority of residents perceived the fate of the ancient forests as the main blame for the communists, who ruled the country incorrectly for 40 years, and, in confirmation of this, in the 80s of the XX century, the main attention was given to the construction of cable cars and new hotels. Until the restoration of the environment, no one cared at that time.
