The first church was erected in honor of the apostle Mark in 336, and in 828-844 completely rebuilt. In 1455-1471, Cardinal Pietro Barbo ordered to rebuild part of the church, after which it became part of the Palazzo Venezia. In the middle of the 18th century, the interior of the temple acquired a baroque style. The apse of the church is decorated with a unique mosaic dating from the 9th century, depicting Christ surrounded by saints and apostles, as well as Gregory IV with a square halo.
