The very first palace was built here in the 15th century for the Minsk princes. After the Qing dynasty came to power, the palace was given to the governors of the emperor in Lanjiang province. In 1853, after the capture of Nanjing by the Taiping, the palace became the headquarters and home of the rebel leader - Hong Xiuquan. The complex was expanded and given a new name – Palace of the Heavenly Ruler. In 1864, Qing troops occupied the city and destroyed the palace. Soon, a new residence of the governors was built in its place. In 1911, the residence was renamed the Presidential Palace. And in 1980, the Chinese authorities decided to open a museum in the palace. Its exposition is dedicated to the life of Sun Yat-sen, Chiang Kai-shek, as well as the history of the Taiping uprising.
