The statue of the Blessed Virgin, which is here called the statue of the Holy Virgin of Almudena, is the patroness of the capital. According to legend, this statue was brought to Spain by the Apostle James, who preached Christianity here in the 1st century. When the Arabs came to Spain, the Christians managed to hide the statue. Alphonse the Sixth, who liberated Madrid from the Arabs in 1083, knew that a miraculous statue was hidden in the city, but could not find her. After a solemn prayer, right during the procession through the streets of the townspeople, stones fell from the wall of the house onto the pavement, and the inhabitants of Madrid saw a statue of their patroness. For several centuries, the statue was kept in the Cathedral of Santa Maria. After its demolition, the statue was moved to the monastery. The Cathedral of Saint Almudena was founded next to the royal palace in 1833. The cathedral was built for a very long time, and before the civil war, construction was stopped altogether. Work was only resumed in 1944, and now the cathedral is almost complete. There is practically nothing inside the cathedral, but in 1992 this cathedral was consecrated by John Paul II.
