Old Beijing Observatory in China, Beijing Resort
Rating: 7,8/10 (9884 votes)  This observatory is a pre-telescopic observatory. All instruments, revolutionary for that time, were created in 1442 and improved during the Qing dynasty. The area of the observatory is 10 thousand square meters. Height e of the astronomical site – 15 meters, and dimensions – 40 by 40 meters. It is believed that the very first astronomical instruments were brought here in 1227. After the city was destroyed by the Mongols in 1279, the first astronomical observatory was built, north of the one that stands now. Construction of the modern observatory was completed by 1442. It was used by the court astronomers to report the positions of the stars to the emperor. In the middle of the 17th century, the Jesuit Ferdinand Verbiest won the astronomical competition, and the laboratory was placed at his disposal. In 1673, some of the instruments in the observatory were remade. Now the old Beijing observatory – it is a museum that is part of the Beijing Planetarium. Almost all ancient astronomical instruments can be seen on the observation deck.
