This cathedral was erected in the city in 961. It was dedicated to the patron saint of the island – Saint Titus. Saint Titus was the founder of the first Christian community on the island.

The Turks turned this cathedral into the Vezir Jami Mosque, in honor of the vizier Kyopruli.

When Crete was freed from the Turks, the mosque became a church again ... This cathedral houses the main Christian shrine of the island – head of Saint Titus. The Venetians took it away from here in the 17th century, but was returned here in 1966.
