The Catholic Cathedral of St. Sophia was built in the 13th century. The facade of the cathedral was built in the Gothic style, decorated with stone"lace". The vaults of the cathedral are supported by snow-white columns (12 columns). Before the capture of Cyprus by the Ottoman Empire, the coronation of kings took place in the cathedral. After the arrival of the Turks (Muslims) to the island, the Christian temple was turned into the Hagia Sophia mosque.
The Turks removed all Christian symbols, the interior of the temple, built a minaret (tower), painted the walls white outside.
In 1945 the cathedral was renamed the Selimiye Mosque. The mosque is one of the most significant buildings for Muslims in Cyprus. Now the Selimiye Mosque is one of the most unusual mosques in the world,
