Saint Margaret Island – the largest island in the Liren archipelago, located half a mile from Cannes. With a length of three kilometers, the island reaches a width of 900 meters.

The island was inhabited during the time of the ancient Romans, then it was called Lero. The island got its new name in the Middle Ages: the crusaders built here the chapel of St. Margaret of Antioch. In the 14th century, the island became associated with Saint Margaret, the sister of Saint Honorat, in part due to the manuscripts of Raymond Ferraud, which stated that Saint Margaret led a community of nuns on the island.

In 1612, Claude de Lorrain, Duke of Chevreuse, received the rights to the island. Here he built a prison, which now houses the Museum of the Sea.
