The temple was erected under Pope Sixtus the Fourth in 1480 on the occasion of the conclusion of a peace treaty. The first chapel to the right of the entrance to the temple – the Chigi chapel – was decorated with frescoes by Raphael, commissioned by Agostino Chigi – banker. The frescoes depict four sibyls – Persian, Tiburtinskaya, Kumskaya and Phrygian, surrounded by angels. In 1656, large-scale restoration work was carried out in the church according to the plans of the Italian architect Pietro da Cortona. During the work, the facade of the building acquired a baroque style.
