During the period of antiquity and the Middle Ages, the city of Pula was surrounded by walls along the entire perimeter, which had ten gates. At the beginning of the 19th century, the walls ceased to carry their main function and they were demolished as unnecessary.

Only a small section of the wall between Piazza Giardini and the Double Gate has survived to this day. The gate was built in the 2nd - 3rd centuries and consists of two arches, which are now the entrance to the Archaeological Museum of Istria.
