The Church of St. Mary of Formosa is located on the site of the Benedictine Abbey, which was known as the Basilica of St. Mary of Formosa. This basilica was built in the 6th century and is decorated with magnificent mosaics, which are now kept in the Archaeological Museum of Istria. The ancient temple was destroyed in the 16th century, but a small side chapel of St. Mary Formosa has survived from it. Fragments of the original 6th century mosaics can still be seen in this building.

The church is currently closed to the public, only during the summer months temporary art exhibitions can be seen here.
