Rating: 7,8/10 (2991 votes)  The old city gate is in the city tower, under the clock. They are the oldest architectural monument in Rijeka. In ancient times, the gates were part of the city walls. Only the gate itself has survived to this day. The origin and purpose of the old city gate causes a lot of controversy among experts, and several versions have been put forward. One version says that the gate was built as a triumphal arch, erected in honor of the Roman emperor Claudius. The second version suggests that the ancient city gate was the main entrance to the old city.
