This triumphal arch was erected in honor of the Roman emperor Hadrian, who visited the city in 130 AD Previously, these graceful and monumental gates had three arched openings, their beautiful columns crowned with Corinthian capitals. The entire structure, with the exception of the columns, was built of white marble. Initially, the gate had two tiers. The second tier housed the statues of the emperor and his family. Later, in 1207, a mighty fortress tower was added to the gate by the Seljuks.
