In 1847, Pius 9 promised forgiveness of sins to all those who visit the Jesuit shrine in Sheshani. The basilica is surrounded by chapels, and next to it is the Shanghai Observatory, founded by the Jesuits. The basilica was founded by the Jesuits during the Taiping uprising on the site where there was a Buddhist monastery. In 1925, the church could no longer accommodate all the pilgrims. From 1925 to 1935, a modern granite basilica was built. The church is made in the neo-renaissance and neo-gothic style. A bell tower rises above the church, 38 meters high, and at the very top is a sculpture of the Madonna and Child. The basilica was partially destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, and the statue of the Madonna was dismantled. The basilica is now welcoming visitors again.
