Initially, the mosque had a square shape, and its dome was covered with lead. Subsequently, the name of Mahmed Pasha was assigned to the mosque, but sources do not report his participation in the construction of the building. In 1901 A.N. Pomerantsev put forward a proposal to convert the abandoned mosque into an Orthodox church. The idea was also approved by Prime Minister Petko Karavelov. The restructuring of the mosque continued throughout the year, in 1903 the church was consecrated in the name of the `` Seven Numbers '' – Saints Cyril and Methodius, as well as their five disciples. During the reconstruction of the structure, an ancient madrasah and a minaret made of black granite, which gave the name of the mosque, were dismantled.
