The idea of building a temple in honor of the liberation of Bulgaria and dedicating it to St. Alexander Nevsky was put forward by Petko Karavelov at the meeting of the First Constituent People's Assembly in 1879. In 1881, a construction committee and a Central Construction Commission were formed in the city. In 1882, the foundation stone of the temple was carried out at the highest place in the central part of the city. The construction of the temple was completed by 1912. The design of the building was entrusted to the Russian architect Alexander Pomerantsev. In 1915, after Bulgaria took part in the First World War on the side of the Central Powers, The People's Assembly of Bulgaria decided to rename the cathedral in honor of Saints Cyril and Methodius, which the official bodies of the Russian Holy Synod called the `` great sin of Bulgaria. '' In 1919, after the abdication of Tsar Ferdinand, the Synod put forward a request to cancel the decision to rename the temple, as a result of which the original name was returned to the cathedral. In 1924, on September 12, in memory of Alexander Nevsky, Metropolitan Maxim of Plovdiv consecrated the main altar of the temple in honor of the prince, September 13 – northern limit – in honor of Saints Cyril and Methodius, September 14 – the southern limit in honor of the Holy Tsar Boris.
