Before the construction of the City Theater, there were two theaters in the city, one of which it was erected in the years 1787-1788. The theater was named after David Becher, who was a famous doctor in the city. This theater worked for over 100 years, and in the 19th century it completely ceased to exist. The main reasons for the closure were too small capacity of the hall, lack of sanitary facilities, moreover, the theater required a major reconstruction. In 1870, the city administration raised the issue of building a new, more modern theater. In 1876, a decree was issued on the construction of a theater on the site of the old theater. Becher. At the same time, a competition was announced for the best building design in order to identify the best architects. According to the results of the competition, the victory was won by the Viennese architect Gustav Korompai. However, the implementation of the project did not require low costs, in connection with which a new competition was announced, in which architects Helmer and Fellner won. The construction of the theater was entrusted to the Karlovy Vary construction company Emanuel Grimm. The sculptures that adorn the building and the ornamental moldings were created by the Viennese sculptor Theodor Friedl. The staircase inside the building was made in the Rococo style. The ceiling dome in the concert hall was decorated with paintings. The grand opening of the theater took place in May 1886.
