Since the bridge passed near the mausoleum of Hadrian – now the Palace of the Holy Angel – the Romans named it Hadrian's Bridge. In 1450, due to an influx of pilgrims, the construction of the bridge broke down, and it collapsed into the river. Many pilgrims died during that time. Soon it was decided to demolish the triumphal arch that blocked the entrance from the bridge. In the 16th century, the bodies of executed criminals were hung on the bridge. After a while, statues of the apostles Paul and Peter appeared on the bridge, and later ten more statues of angels appeared.
