The Great Mosque in Sousse was built in 851, during the reign of the Aghlabid dynasty. It looks more like a fortress. In the 17th century, it was reconstructed, and in the 20th century, a serious restoration was carried out, after which the interior of the mosque acquired its original appearance.
The Grand Mosque looks like a fortress with two beautiful watchtowers located in north and southeast corners. The inner courtyard of the temple is surrounded by high semicircular arches, similar to horseshoes. The walls of the mosque are decorated with a Kufi pattern.
Initially, the Great Mosque did not have a minaret, but a little later it was completed. He looks squat. A staircase descends from it to the courtyard.
In addition to the magnificent architecture, the mosque is also interesting for its numerous relics and rich history. The prayer halls of the mosque are allowed to be visited only by Muslims, but despite this, there is a museum inside the building, which can be visited by everyone.
As one of the architectural structures of the city's medina Sousse The Grand Mosque is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
