The Djami Kebir mosque description and photos - Cyprus: Larnaca. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. Title in English - The Djami Kebir mosque. Photo and descriptionOne of the most famous mosques in Larnaca, located almost in the very heart of the city, has several names at once: Jami Kebir, Kami Kebir, also called the Buyuk Kami mosque. It is located directly opposite the Larnaca Fortress, built in the Middle Ages, and not far from the Church of Saint Lazarus. It was its location and proximity to famous attractions that made this mosque so popular among foreign tourists. What is noteworthy, Jami Kebir, built in the 16th century, was originally a Catholic cathedral, which was turned into a mosque. In general, during the 300 years of Turkish rule in Cyprus, many other Christian temples erected by the Byzantines and Venetians, were rebuilt into Muslim religious buildings. The Kami Kebir building, made of light stone, has a relatively small size. Outside, it is decorated with arches and columns, and its graceful minaret rises several tens of meters above the ground. This beautiful tower is a kind of reference point for those who head to this mosque, as it can be seen practically from anywhere in the city. But inside the building looks much simpler and more modest than outside. Jami Kebir is a working mosque, which is constantly visited by both local and visiting Muslims. However, tourists are also allowed to enter there. Anyone can view this beautiful building, but when entering it you must take off your shoes, and women still need to cover their heads.
