The Sonobudoyo Museum was opened in 1935 and is dedicated to the culture and history of Java. The museum is located near the Keraton Sultan's Palace, in the central square of Yogyakarta.

The museum building is a reflection of traditional Javanese architecture. The project was developed by the Dutch architect Kersten. The total area of the museum is over 7,000 sq. M. It is worth noting that the museum has a huge collection of artifacts and relics that can impress any archaeologist and interest specialists in Javanese art. In terms of the number of collections of artifacts, the Sonobudoyo Museum ranks second in Indonesia (the first place belongs to the National Museum in Jakarta).

Among the exhibits of the museum there are ceramics of the Neolithic era, statues and objects from bronze, which date back to the VIII century. Also, guests of the museum can see the famous Wayang puppets, which are made of buffalo skin. In addition, among the exhibits there are two gamelan - sets of traditional Indonesian musical instruments. The museum presents a unique collection of ancient bronze bells from the island of Java and other islands of the Malay archipelago - Bali and Madura, an ancient collection of weapons (national kris daggers, more than 1000 species), looms, antique samples of painted batik.

On the territory of the museum there is a large library with an area of 668 sq.m. The library contains manuscripts and books on Indonesian culture. In addition, every evening, except Sunday, you can see the Wayang Kulit performance in the museum - a shadow theater performance.
