Byblos Castle was built in the 12th century by the Crusaders on the basis of more ancient Roman fortifications, and is surrounded by a moat. In 1188, the castle was captured and destroyed by Saladin, but 10 years later the crusaders were able to recapture and restore it. The castle is surrounded by other historical buildings - Egyptian temples, a Phoenician necropolis, and a Roman amphitheater. Now there is a museum in the castle.
