Photo and description

Cathedral of St. Kiliana was built in the XI-XII centuries over the burial place of the Irish monk Kilian, who became the patron saint of Wurzburg and winemaking. Now the relics of this saint are kept in the crypt of the nearby New Cathedral.

This cathedral is the fourth largest Romanesque church in Germany and its simple exterior contrasts sharply with the magnificent interior decoration in the Baroque style. In the northern nave are the graves of bishops, whose tombstones were made by the sculptor Tillmann Riemenschneider. At the end of the north transept is a chapel built by the architect Balthasar Neumann for the bishops of Schonborn.
