Photo and description

A huge architectural complex - the Residence of the Bishops - is located in the center of the Old Town. This building was built in 1720-1744 by order of two cardinals - brothers Johann Philip Franz and Friedrich Karl von Schonborn. The construction was supervised by two architects von Hildenbrandt and von Welsch.

But the Residence became famous for its unique grand staircase, designed by the architect Balthasar Neumann. The vault above this baroque staircase is decorated with the world's largest fresco by the Venetian artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

In the Imperial Hall of the Palace, there are Tiepolo frescoes depicting subjects from the history of Wurzburg, including portraits of artists, architects, sculptors who worked in the palace. The huge Garden Hall is decorated with stucco decorations by Antonio Bossi. The Venetian room is decorated with a tapestry depicting the Carnival of Venice and decorative panels with paintings by Johann Talhofer.

A special impression is made by visiting the palace chapel, the interior of which is richly decorated with paintings, sculptures and stucco moldings. In the side altars of the chapel you can see magnificent paintings by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.
