Photo and description

Cheluk village is located near Ubud. Ubud is a small town in the central part of Bali, closer to the north.

Ubud is also known for being considered the "land of artists" - beautiful nature, peace and tranquility attract artists who even buy houses in this area. Previously, the Balinese used paints of mineral stones when painting, but in 1936 Europeans came to the island, brought with them paints, canvas, paper for drawing, and taught the Balinese how to use all this.

Even before the arrival of the Europeans, the German artist Walter Spies came to Ubud, who founded a settlement of artists in the city, as well as, being also a choreographer, invented and staged the famous and spectacular "kecak" - "dance of the monkeys" which is popular with millions of tourists, coming to Bali. It is not for nothing that Ubud is considered the center of the cultural life of the archipelago - the city houses the most interesting galleries of wooden sculptures on the island of Bali.

If Ubud is famous for its artwork and woodwork, then Cheluk is famous for its jewelry craft. The village is home to master jewelers who create masterpieces of gold and silver. The products of these craftsmen are sold not only in Indonesia, but all over the world.

In the past, the villagers were mostly farmers. Rumor has it that at first there were only three families in the village who belonged to the Panda caste, who became the pioneers in jewelry. They processed metals and created accessories for Hindu worship. With the development of tourism in Bali, farmers have become more engaged in the study of jewelry craft, and have reached considerable heights in this. The method of making the products is kept secret, but the decorations made in the national manner characteristic of the area amaze with their extraordinary form and beauty.
