Photo and description

The oldest Norwegian stave was built in 1050 in the village of Urnes on land that belonged to a noble family. The carpenters used logs (Norwegian 'becoming') up to 12 meters long. The upright pillars form the static basis of the structure. Internal pillars, turning into arches and cross-pieces of the internal frame, connect the floor of the church with the beams of the ceiling. Thanks to the skill of carpenters who have been able to precisely match the walls and columns, Norwegian stave churches can withstand even the worst winter storms.
