Photo and descriptionCape Cabo Girano is located on the southern coast of Madeira, two kilometers west of the center of Camara de Lobos, a typical fishing village. The village is famous for the fact that Winston Churchill loved to spend time there and painted some of his paintings. In addition, Camara de Lobos is considered to be the main saber fishing site. Cape Cabo Giranou is considered a popular place among travelers, and besides, it is considered one of the highest capes not only in Europe, but also in the world. In October 2012, an observation deck was installed on the promontory (580 meters above sea level), offering stunning views. Cape Cabo Giranou is a fairly well-known place among paragliders and base jumping enthusiasts. Once upon a time these were impregnable rocks, but now everything is cultivated. The entire mountainous area has been turned into plantations where fruits, vegetables and grapes grow. In the local dialect, such small and cultivated plots of land are called "fazhensch". Previously, these lands could only be reached by boat, but since 2003, for the convenience of farmers, something like a cable car has been installed. There is a version that Cape Cabo Giranou was named by Joao Goncalves Zarco, the discoverer of Madeira, when he skirted it during his travels, because the second part of the name of the cape from Portuguese translates as “reversal”. Among the attractions is the museum, which is located on the observation deck. The exhibits of the museum will tell about famous personalities who have visited the cape. There is the Chapel of the Mother of God of Fatima, which was built in 1974.
