Church of St. Agatha (Crkva Sv. Agate) description and photos - Croatia: Novigrad. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The name in English is Crkva Sv. Agate. Photo and descriptionAgatha Church is located on the Kanfanar road, near Vidulini Barat. The nave of the building with a traditional apse was built in the Byzantine style. The church, as was previously believed, was built no later than the 10th century, but then researchers found out that it belongs to the buildings of the 6th century, found by archaeologists and dated by them to this period. On the walls of the apse, you can see the plant ornament characteristic of art of Istrian Middle Ages. The frescoes that adorn the western wall of the church have been layered with lime over the years and were restored in 1949. Time completely destroyed the frescoes located on the eastern side of the apse and in the upper part of it. They are examples of Benedictine art from the Ottonian period. Specialists attribute the painting of frescoes to the turn of the 11-12 centuries. On one of the frescoes we see the image of Jesus Christ on the throne surrounded by angels, on the other - eleven apostles. To the left of the arched entrance is the sacrifice of Abraham, to the right is Cain. The frescoes in the Church of St. Agatha are simple in plot, which is typical for the art of the early Middle Ages. They are proof of the existence of independent schools of painting in Istria in the early Middle Ages.
