Photo and description

The Balsic Tower is an interesting object for all tourists, which is in no way inferior to such city attractions as the Balsic Palace, the Oriental Bazaar, and the Venice Chamber.

The name of this tower comes from the Balsic family, at one time they were the rulers of Serbia. The tower itself was built in the 12th century for the purpose of being used as a summer residence for this noble dynasty. For many years, the building was the tallest building in the city, but it became famous for another reason.

The last hours and minutes of the life of a rabbi named Shabtai Tzvi passed in this tower. He considered himself the second messiah, so he founded the religious Sabbatian movement for the Jews, led the uprising before the Ottomans, but at the end of his life the rabbi converted to Islam. Shabtai Tzvi was buried under the name of Aziz Mehmed Efendi.

The square where the Balsic tower is located is also a famous landmark. During the medieval period, a slave market was located here. Some believe that it was on it that the Spanish writer was sold, with such a famous, now legendary name, Miguel de Cervantes, who is the author of Don Quixote. It is known from his biography that he subsequently spent several years in Ulcinj.

Today, the Balsic tower houses an art gallery and hosts various exhibitions.
