One of the most famous and interesting sights of Montenegro is Kanli Kula, a fortress whose name is translated from Turkish as “bloody tower”. It is located in the old town of Herceg Novi, in its northern part.

This powerful structure (more than 85 meters above sea level) served as an excellent defense for the medieval city from external enemies and at the same time served as a prison, which is why it got its name. Some inscriptions on the stone walls made by prisoners of the Bloody Tower have survived to this day.

It is believed that the construction of the fortress by the Turks began in the middle of the 16th century, although the first records about it were discovered in the 17th century. It has not yet been possible to name a specific time, the date of construction of this structure. Over the centuries, the appearance of the fortress has changed several times due to major restorations and reconstructions.

The huge courtyard of the Kanli Kula fortress since 1966 has turned into a summer amphitheater due to its large-scale reconstruction. Today, this stage is considered the most original and largest among the summer outdoor areas on the Adriatic coast. The maximum number of spectators that the amphitheater can accommodate is 15 thousand. Although there are only 1000 seats here. The natural decorations that create the ancient walls of the fortress facilitate the organization of medieval-style theatrical performances on this stage.
