Kazan metro was opened in 2005 during the celebration of the millennium of Kazan.

In 1996, Russian President Boris Yeltsin made a decision to build a subway in Kazan. Funding for the construction began in 1997. The first tunnel was completed in 2000. The construction was undertaken by the municipal unitary enterprise Kazmetrostroy. Eight tunnel boring complexes were used simultaneously in the work. The Lenmetrogiprotrans institute took part in the construction.

The first five stations of the Kazan metro were solemnly opened on August 27, 2005, during the celebration of the city's thousandth anniversary. The first passengers were the guests of the holiday - President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and President of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev. Two hours after the grand opening, the metro stations were open to citizens.

The first metro line connected the opposite sleeping areas and the city center. The length of the line was more than ten kilometers, there are 7 stations on it: "Kozya Sloboda", "Kremlevskaya", "Ploshchad Gabdulla Tukaya", "Sukonnaya Sloboda", "Ametyevo", "Gorki" and "Prospect Pobedy". The complex also includes an engineering building and an electric depot.

All stations of the Kazan metro have two lobbies with exits to the city, but not all exits are still open. There are underground shopping galleries at the stations "Prospect Pobedy", "Ploschad Tukaya" and "Kremlevskaya".

Metro designers have provided everything for the safety, convenience and comfort of passengers, including for people with disabilities. By 2013, for their convenience, it is planned to complete equipping all stations with lifting mechanisms and elevators.

In May 2013, it is planned to open three more stations on the existing Central Line: Dekabristov, Moskovskaya and Aviastroitelnaya. It is planned to build three more metro lines: Savinovskaya, Privolzhskaya and Zanoksinskaya. In total, it is planned to build four lines with transition stations and about forty stations.

For the first time in Russia, the builders of the subway have laid special cables along the entire length of the tunnels to provide passengers with continuous mobile communications. The cables operate according to the principle of a slot antenna and are also used for service communications.
