Photo and Description

The London Underground, also called the Underground, is a rapid transit system that spans Greater London and parts of the surrounding counties of Buckinghamshire, Essex and Hertfordshire. The London Underground is the oldest in the world, the first lines were opened in 1863, and in 1890 electric trains began to run on the underground. The first subway trains looked very exotic: there were no windows in the carriages (why are they in dark underground tunnels?), But a coal-fired steam locomotive pulled the carriages.

Already at the beginning of the 19th century, the streets of London could not cope with the increased traffic flow , and the construction of the underground railway in the most optimal way solved the issue of unloading streets, organizing urban transport and combining surface railways into a single network. In 1855, Parliament passed a resolution to build an underground railway from Paddington Station to Farrington Street via King's Cross called the Metropolitan Railway (City Railroad), which later became the name of a new form of urban public transport. Due to funding difficulties, construction was delayed, and the first passengers were able to travel on the Metropolitan Railway only on January 10, 1863.

The London Underground has 270 stations, its length is 402 km - the longest metro in the world after Shanghai. In terms of the number of stations, it is also among the leaders, and in terms of the number of transported passengers (1 billion in 2007) - the third in Europe after Moscow and Paris.

Four of the 11 London Underground lines are shallow, the rest are deep ... The longest escalator in Europe is located at Angel Station in London - 60 meters long, vertical rise - 27.5 meters.

The metro is divided into zones, and fares are paid depending on which zone and to which zone you go. Discounts are provided when using contactless transport cards (Oyster Card, "oyster"). Unlike the Russian one, there are controllers in the London Underground, and fines for travel without a ticket can be very significant.

Opening hours are approximately 5 am to midnight, some lines may close earlier on weekends.

Several television series have been filmed about the London Underground, it has also become the scene of numerous “urban legends”.
