The most picturesque sight of Izhevsk is the State Zoological Park of Udmurtia, which opened in September 2008 to the delight of residents and guests of the city. The opening of the zoo was timed to coincide with the 450th anniversary of the entry of Udmurtia into the Russian state. The initiator and author of the idea of creating a zoo was the President of Udmurtia - A.A. Volkov.

The park with an area of 16 hectares is located in the central part of the city on the bank of the Izhevsk pond and is a unique architectural complex with open enclosures, where ponds, ditches and glass are used as fencing. Visitors to the zoo, walking along the bridges and paths, can observe the life of animals, close to the conditions of their habitat in nature.

The talisman and symbol of the zoo is the bronze wolf Akela, welcoming guests at the entrance to the park. As the legend says, a wolf is a symbol of an inseparable family life, loyalty and devotion, constant care and attention, and a wolf that has lost a partner will never start a new one again. It has become a tradition for visitors to the park who come here for the first time to touch Akela's bronze paw and make a wish (they say it comes true).

In the zoological park of Udmurtia, you can see: polar and brown bears, walruses, northern fur seal, Scottish pony, camel, African ostrich, Siberian lynx, tiger, Far Eastern leopard, striped raccoon, Japanese crane, diamond pheasant, macaques and chimpanzees and of course wolves. The list of animals is constantly updated, now two hundred individuals belonging to 48 species are full-fledged residents of the zoo.
