Photo and description

One of the largest and most beautiful architectural monuments of the Russian Orthodox Church is the Cathedral of St. Michael's Cathedral, built in Izhevsk.

The land under the current church was consecrated back in 1765, during the construction of the Trinity Chapel within the factory cemetery. In 1784 the chapel was rebuilt into a temple, and in 1810 everything was destroyed by fire. In 1855, a thirty-meter high Byzantine-style chapel was built on the site of the temple in honor of the Archangel Michael (patron saint of gunsmiths), and in 1876 fundraising began for the construction of a new temple, in which the workers of the arms factory took part, allocating 1% of their salaries. Due to wars and revolutionary unrest, the construction of the temple was often suspended, but on November 4, 1915, a solemn consecration of the throne took place in the name of the Archangel Michael. In 1929 the church was closed and sealed, from 1932 to 1937 the building housed a local history museum. In 1937, the building, which was considered a symbol of power and invincibility, was destroyed.

In 2000, a resolution was adopted on the reconstruction of St. Michael's Cathedral and in May 2004, the ceremonial foundation of the building took place. On August 5, 2007, Patriarch Alexy II consecrated the main throne of the newly built St. Michael's Cathedral in the presence of the President of Udmurtia.

Currently, the architectural ensemble of the most beautiful cathedral is located on the highest point of the city and has a height of 67 meters. Lawns with flowering flower beds are laid out around the cathedral, benches with street lamps are set up, and at the foot there is a majestic seven-meter cross. At night, the lighting equipment is turned on and the tent dome of the cathedral is visible from almost anywhere in Izhevsk. Residents of the city consider St. Michael's Cathedral a symbol of the rebirth of Udmurtia.
