Photo and description

The Anfushi necropolis is located near the Eastern Harbor, in the Ras al-Tin area. There are five Greek stone tombs here that date back to around 250 BC. Built of alabaster and marble, these sarcophagi were discovered only in 1901 in several burial structures.

The necropolis building was decorated with figures of Egyptian gods (Osiris, Anubis, Horus, Isis), multi-colored geometric patterns and frescoes. The attraction is an open courtyard surrounded by rooms in which one or more graves were placed. The first two burial chambers contain granite sarcophagi corresponding to the period of the pharaohs. From these rooms there are exits to the reservoir and a staircase through the courtyard to the next burial hall. The walls of the two tombs are exquisitely decorated with stripes of frescoes and carvings. Scenes of the afterlife of the pharaohs side by side with Roman military sailing ships. One of the halls has a door flanked by two small columns with statues of sphinxes on top of each.

Most of the third burial structure was once flooded, and its stone blocks were used in the construction of other buildings. The water was gone, the structural differences of this room from others became visible - there are three niches dug into the ground, and a row of empty burial chambers. The fourth room is dilapidated, with a water tank installed on its right. The fifth tomb is the largest, richly decorated, and contains a stone sarcophagus, a staircase and an open courtyard.
