The necropolis contains more than 5 000 tombs carved into the rocks of the Iblei Mountains. The age of the necropolis is approximately 2.5 to 3.5 thousand years. Historians claim that the necropolis was created by the Siculs – a people who appeared in Sicily at the end of the Bronze Age. Most recently, the necropolis was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The necropolis is located on a plateau surrounded by canyons formed by the rivers Calcinara and Anapo.
