A true paradise for sailing fans is the southern island of the Aland archipelago - Kokar. It is located 28 km from Mariehamn and 74 km from Turku. Kyokar is popularly known as "the island of the pirates of the ironic". A small ferry takes those wishing to visit this "adventure country" in 2.5 hours. On the island you can see the site of a Bronze Age man, the ruins of a Franciscan monastery and a magnificent medieval church made of gray granite. It also houses the island's museum, which has collected within its walls household items, boats and photographs.
