Photo and description

The Church of St. Peter (Saint-Pierre) in Avignon is located in one of the central squares of the city - Place Saint-Pierre. The first church building was erected in the 7th century. The building, which guests of the city see now, was built in the first half of the XIV century. The restoration of the temple was carried out at the expense of Cardinal Pierre de Pre. The facade of the church is designed in the later Flaming Gothic style, which is characterized by a large number of ornaments resembling long tongues of flame. The facade of the church was decorated in 1512. Thanks to these decorative elements, the church is recognized as one of the most beautiful temples in Avignon. In the interior of the temple, you can also notice the features of the Baroque style.

An octagonal bell tower rises above the main building of the church, and inside it can be entered through wooden doors decorated with skillful carvings. Visitors to the Saint-Pierre church celebrate their beauty and uniqueness. This element was made by the sculptor Antoine Volard in the 16th century. The height of the door leaves is 4 meters. The altarpiece, located behind the altar of the church, was made by the Avignon sculptor Imberto Boachon, who also lived here in the 16th century.

The church today hosts services and concerts of organ music. During these events, the church is opened to visitors, who can see the gilded 17th century choirs inside the temple, as well as the painting "Adoration of the Magi" by the artist Simon de Chalon (17th century). Those wishing to continue their acquaintance with the work of this artist should visit the Museum of Fine Arts of Avignon.
