Photo and description

The mountain village of Omodos is located in the Limassol district, just 80 kilometers from Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. The village is located among the high Troodos mountains and has long been famous for its vineyards and orchards.

Unfortunately, not so much is known about the history of Omodos. Scientists believe that earlier, in the Byzantine era, the village of Kupetra was located on this territory. However, it was destroyed during the confrontation between the self-proclaimed Byzantine emperor and ruler of Cyprus Isaac Comnenus and the English king Richard the Lionheart. Some time after the disappearance of Kupetra, the village of Omodos appeared on this land, which was also designated on the maps as Nomotsios and Homodos.

This village is famous primarily for its wine, the production of which is the main occupation of local residents. Every August in Omodos, a wine festival is held, where you can not only taste this alcoholic drink made by the best local winemakers, but also taste traditional national dishes, participate in competitions and various entertainment.

In addition, one of the main attractions the village is a beautiful stone church of the Holy Cross, built, according to some sources, as early as 337, when it was part of a large monastery. It is considered one of the most holy places in Cyprus, as it contains a fragment of the rope with which Jesus Christ was tied to the cross, as well as the relics of many saints.

There are also several museums in the village, including a traditional wine museum,
