Photo and description

The Government House is a building built in Cetinje by 1910 by the Italian Corradini, which is a mixture of Renaissance and Baroque styles. Its dimensions according to the plan are 66 by 52 meters. At the beginning of the twentieth century, this building was actually the largest in tiny Montenegro. During its existence, the Government House contained, in addition to the Montenegrin government itself, parliament, post office, telegraph, printing house and theater.

Since 1989, the Government House has been converted into a city historical museum. Museum visitors will be able to get acquainted with the true treasures of the social, cultural and political past of Montenegro: from the Paleolithic to the present day. There are eight expositions in total, the total area of the museum is 1400 sq. meters. More than one and a half thousand exhibits fit here, rare photographs and about 300 historical documents.

The ancient centuries in the museum are presented not only by samples found during excavations, but also by reproductions of frescoes, as well as maps of the excavations themselves. The hall dedicated to the Middle Ages displays pieces of furniture, jewelry that once belonged to members of royal families, etc. XVI-XVII centuries are represented by various documents about continuous wars with the Ottoman Empire.

The XVIII-XIX centuries are devoted to the active opposition of Montenegrins to the Turks, as well as the beginning of the liberation movement. One of the most interesting and unique exhibits presented in the museum is the Turkish flag with traces of bullets, found after the key battle for the independence of Montenegro, the battle of Vuchi Do (1876).
