Photo and description

The Kiev Opera House has an ancient history, but it acquired a modern building only in 1901. The reason for this is simple - the old building of the Opera House burned down in a fire in 1896.

The new building of the Opera House was erected by the famous architect V. Schreter, who had to carefully think over the construction plan. For this purpose, he made about 280 drawings, according to which 300 people who worked in the construction and erected the theater building. It is noteworthy that at the beginning of the twentieth century this theater had the largest stage in the territory of the Russian Empire (its one width was 34 meters, height - 27 meters, and depth - 17 meters).

In general, the building of the Kiev Opera House is made in the style located at the junction of the French Renaissance and Neo-Renaissance. This is what prompted the wild idea in the 1930s to reconstruct the facade of the theater in such a way that it was more in line with “proletarian culture”. Fortunately, this idea did not find support at the top and was not implemented in practice. However, the theater building itself over time began to need restoration, which was done in the 80s of the XX century. During the restoration work was carried out to increase the stage, the wardrobe was moved to the basement of the theater, the actors received new rehearsal rooms and dressing rooms. In addition, the theater was equipped with modern electronics at that time.

Today, the Kiev Opera House never ceases to amaze with its beauty, moreover, it can be seen in everything - in bronze and gilded decoration, luxurious crystal chandeliers. The altered orchestra pit, which can accommodate a hundred musicians, is also striking. Thanks to the work done, the theater remains one of the most prestigious in the world for both ballet and opera performances, as well as for chamber and symphony orchestras.
