American Jim Thompson organized a silk production in Thailand, which fell into decay after World War II. In 1959 he brought from the province old Thai houses of the 18th-20th centuries. and installed them in no particular order on the grounds of his estate in Bangkok. Now it houses a collection of ancient objects and art monuments, covering a time period of fourteen centuries.

Thompson himself disappeared without a trace in 1967 in the Malaysian Cameron Highlands. The versions of his disappearance included a fall from a cliff, a heart attack, and CIA intervention.
